George Washington

Today we read a book about George Washington and learned that he:
1. is often called the "father of our country"
2. was our first president.
3. dreamed to become a soldier.
4. was a great leader.
5. trained his soldiers and inspired them.
6. Once the country became the USA they needed a leader and George was elected to be the first president.
7. Being president was a very hard job.
8. traveled to many states to learn about their problems and try to solve them.
9. was elected president two times.
10. Today, there was many places named after him.
11. His face is on the one dollar bill and quarter.

Then of course we had to make George Washington.

Abe Lincoln

Yesterday we learned about Honest Abe. We learned that he:
1. Was our 16th president.
2. Lived in a log cabin.
3. Loved the outdoors.
4. Loved to read.
5. Had many jobs: wood chopper, farmer, carpenter, drove a boat and was a soldier.
6. Was a great storyteller.
7. Was tall and strong.
8. Opened a store where one day he bought a barrel that had a law book in it and it changed his life.
9. Taught himself about law by reading books and became a great lawyer.
10. Being a lawyer wasn't enough so he held several government offices to help people.
11. There is a memorial for him in Washington, DC.

Then the children made Abe and we documented what they learned.

Tuesday

Today we kicked off our USA unit! The children started their jobs: bald eagle patterns, counting stars on a flag, capitalizing letters, and measuring Lincoln's hats. (I will post pictures later).

We talked about the duties of a president and the children made a tear paper flag with a person. Then Ms. Emily ask the children what they would do if they were president. I will take pictures when we get their answers typed up and put them together.

A peek at our week: We will learn about Abe Lincoln, George Washington, and some USA symbols like the Bald Eagle. I'm excited as always.

Hunt

The children had a blast running around the classroom to find letter and number cards. After they found the cards they sat on the carpet. Then I called out numbers and letters and if the children had that card they put their card in the "mailbox".
They all did a fantastic job!!!

Post Office

I'm sorry I've been MIA this week but we have been super busy in the classroom.

On Monday we started our Post Office unit by watching a Field Trip to the Post Office on the Smart Board and reading a book. Yesterday we discussed mail carriers and made a mail carrier bag. Today we are going to go on a letter, number, and shape hunt around our classroom.

The children have been doing a fantastic job with their jobs.

How many sweat hearts in the jar- here the children have to roll a die, count the dots, and put that many sweat hearts in the jar.

Mailbox Sorting- here the children have to sort upper and lower case letters.

Letter Matching- Here the children have to look at the letter on the envelope and find its matching lower case stamp (sorry the picture is blurry).

Popsicle Matching- Here the children picked a card with their name or a friend's name and had to find the letter popsicle sticks that match.

Yesterday we had some extra time before Music so we played Pop the Balloon on the Smart Board. The balloons had a picture on it and each child had a turn to name the picture, figure out what it begins with, and pop the balloon to check their answer. They had a blast playing it!
