Jungle Week

We started our unit on the jungle by having the Memphis Botanic Gardens coming and talking to the children about birds. The children made a bird buddy and went bird watching.

 They had a ball looking for birds.

On Tuesday we learn many fun facts about toucans. Then we made our own toucan. 

1. Toucans live in the jungles of South and Central America.

2. They live in a flock. 

3. They sleep in holes in trees. 

4. They eat insects and fruit.

5. Toucans have bills. 

On Thursday we learned about sloths and watched a video on the Smart Board. Then we made our own sloths to hang around the room. 

1. We learned that they live in Central and South America. 

2. They use their long claws to hang from branches. 

3. They like to eat leaves and fruit.

4. The sleep for up to 20 hours a day!

5.They are extremely slow.

 

Today we were all extremely excited to celebrate our 100th day. 

The children enjoyed walking through our door today.

 We started our celebration by searching for 100's on our sheet. Then we thought of what we wish we had 100 of and what we would not want 100 of...the children came up with some great answers.

After we made portraits of ourselves at 100. 

We ended our celebration by eating 100 items for snack. 

It's been a fun week and I can't wait for next week.

Zoo Week

On Monday we started our unit on the zoo. We talked about the zoo and what animals live in a zoo. Then the children sorted what animals live in a zoo and on a farm. 

Then the children drew a picture of their favorite zoo animal. 

We learned about Noah's Ark and during prayer center the children cut out the ark and colored a paper plate. 

 

Tuesday we looked and pictures of zebras and learn any fun facts about them.

• Zebra are part of the equidae family along with horse and donkeys.
• Every zebra has a unique pattern of black and white stripes.

• Wild zebras live in Africa.
  
• Zebras run from side to side to being chased by a predator.
  
• Zebras have excellent eyesight and hearing.
  
• Zebras stand up while sleeping.
  
• Zebras eat mostly grass.
  
  Then the children made their own zebra.
  
  
  
  Yesterday we learned about giraffes.
  
  • The giraffe is the tallest mammal in the world, with even new-born babies being taller than most humans.
  • Baby Giraffes can stand within half an hour and after only 10 hours can actually run alongside their family.
  • Giraffes spend most of their lives standing up; they even sleep.
  • Giraffes only spend between 10 minutes and two hours asleep per day. They have one of the shortest sleep requirements of any mammal.
  • Giraffes are sociable peaceful animals.
  • Just like snowflakes and human fingerprints, no two giraffes have the same spot pattern.
  • Even giraffes tongues are huge.
  • A male giraffe can weigh as much as a pick up truck!
  • A giraffe's habitat is usually found in African savannas, grasslands or open woodlands.

  • The hair that makes up a giraffes tail is about 10 times thicker than the average strand of human hair.

  Today we learn some fun facts about monkeys. 

  • There are currently 264 known monkey species.
    
  • Monkeys can be divided into two groups, Old World monkeys that live in Africa and Asia, and New World monkeys that live in South America.
    
  • Apes are not monkeys.
    
  • Some monkeys live on the ground, while others live in trees.
    
  • Different monkey species eat a variety of foods, such as fruit, insects, flowers, leaves and reptiles.
    
  • Most monkeys have tails.
    
  • Groups of monkeys are known as a ‘tribe’, ‘troop’ or ‘mission’.
    Then the children made a monkey.
    
    
    We had a fun week learning about different animals. I hope everyone has a great 4 day weekend.
    
    

Teddy Bear

Yesterday we had a fun time with our teddy bears!

 We came up with a list of words that describe our teddy bears.

 Then we completed a venn graph by thinking about the difference between a real and teddy bear and what they have in common.

Today we talked about all the big things that God made.

Bears

To start off our unit on bear we learned about hibernation. Everyone enjoyed listening to the hibernation song, click HERE to listen.

 Then we read a story about where certain animals hibernation. After we sorted if animals do or don't hibernate using an anchor chart.

 

To end our day we went on a bear hunt, listen to the song HERE.

Yesterday we learned some fun facts about brown bears and watched some videos on National Geographic. Then we made a bear hibernating in his den.

Today we learned some fun facts about Panda bears and watched a live cam from a zoo. 

Then we graphed our favorite bear and analyzed the data. Panda bears WON!!!

Don't forget to bring a teddy bear to school tomorrow!

Christmas fun

We had a fun short day today. We did our jobs, went to Library and ate a special yummy snack, thanks Jill! Then we played in centers before the big performance. The children did SO good during the program!!! I'm so proud of them. 

I'm going to miss them during break but looking forward to seeing family,  Christmas, planning Finn's 1st birthday and spending time with my boys.

Christmas Week

We started off our week of learning about Christmas by reading the story Christmas in the Barn.

Then the children made Jesus in a manager. 

We all enjoyed watching the presentation of Velveteen Rabbit. 

Tuesday we talked about the legend of the candy cane. We learned that not only is it a yummy treat but it's a reminder of what Christmas is all about...Jesus. Not only is the candy cane in the shape of a staff, but when it's held upside down it forms a "J" for Jesus. Then the children glues white tissue paper to make stripes for a candy cane. Then we held it upside down and put Jesus in a manger. 

Yesterday we learned many fun facts about reindeer and looked at pictures of them. After we made one of the most famous reindeer of all...Rudolph.

Today we learned about Angels. We talked about the Angels in the Christmas story and in the Bible. We learned that they are God's messengers and they watch over us. Then the children made these beautiful Angels.

I can't wait for our program tomorrow. The children have practiced really hard. See everyone at 11:00 in the Family Room. 

Winter Animals

Wow! we have had a busy busy week in 4K. 

On Tuesday Mrs. Schmitz came and completed a lesson with the children on Superflex and the characters. Superflex is a curriculum designed to teach younger students how to regulate their behaviors and become stronger social problem solvers. It is use to engaging teaching approach to help students learn about their own inner Superflex and the related strategies they can use to outwit and outsmart various social challenges. There are many different Unthinkable characters, such as Glassman, Brain Eater, One-Sided Sid, Mean Jean, and others.

On Wednesday we went and watched Kindergarten through 2 grade put on their Christmas Program.

Yesterday we learned about peguins by reading a National Geographic book. We learned how they huddle together to keep warm. We tried it out to see how warm we could get and as you can see everyone had fun.

Then we practiced walking like a penguin. 

Then we made our own penguin. 

Today we went to the Christmas Bazaar. Everyone had fun playing games and shopping with our buddies. 

After we read a National Geographic story about polar bears and learned many fun facts. Then we made one and shared a fact that we learned.

At Prayer Center the children learned about St. Nick. Then we cut out a hat and decorated it with tissue paper. 

 

I have to brag on how SMART these children are by showing you that every sentence in our morning message was read by a child. SOOOOO PROUD of them.
