Tuesday Guidance Lesson

Yesterday Mrs. Schimtz came and completed a guidance lesson with the children based off the book Teaching Children Self-Control by Jamis Goldring. This book is designed to give children the skills and strategies needed to control their impulses and create self-awareness, emotional competence, and mindfulness. As children learn self-control at a young age they are better prepared to deal with their emotions and more complex situations later in life. The activities in the book with encourage children to manage their own behavior, take responsibility for their actions, stop and think about the consequences, make positive choices, and resolve conflicts peacefully.

During Mrs. Schmitz lesson, she taught the children the peace pose (sitting criss cross with their hands cupped in their lap). Then they completed their first self-control exercise where the children had to shake a certain part of their body slowly, fast, and stop. She reinforced to the children that they can control the way their body moves and have self-control. The children also learned person-space pattern, which is a space between your bodies so your bodies are not touching.

We will continue to complete exercise in the classroom.

St. Patty's Day

This week we have been learning about Saint Patrick and all the fun things that have to do with St. Patrick's Day.
On Monday we learned that Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. He used a shamrock to teach the people of Ireland about God. Saint Patrick told the people that the shamrock was like the Trinity, that in the one God there are three divine beings: the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
We learned that St. Patrick's Day is celebrated in countries around the world and is usually celebrated with a parade.
We also disused many symbols of St. Patrick's Day:
1. Wearing green is said to bring good luck.
2. Leprechauns are tiny people dressed in green and collect pots of gold. They say that if you catch a leprechaun, he will lead you to his pot of gold at the end of a rainbow.

Then the children made a shamrock with the Trinity on it.

Yesterday we read the story Leprechaun on the Loose. The story is about a Leprechaun on the loose in a classroom and only one boy knows he is there. Then the children made the most adorable Leprechauns.

During recess yesterday all the children were pretending to be Leprechauns and trying to catch one another. HEHE

Today the children are going to go on a color hunt in the classroom!

Here is a quick catch up on all the fun that has been going on in our room this week.

Tuesday we read a book about bees.
Wednesday the children learned about ants and then made some adorable ants that we hung on the back of our door.

Yesterday we read The Very Lonely Firefly and learned a few fun facts about them. Then the children did a wonderful job making one.

Today we will learn about grasshoppers!

Insects

Yesterday we kicked off our Insect unit by discuss what makes an insect an insect. Then we learned the parts of an insects body by singing Dr. Jean's Insect Body (head, thorax, abdomen, eyes, mouth , antennae two, six legs and there's an insect for you!)

Today we learned about bees. We found out that they live in big groups called colonies and every bee has a different job. There is one queen bees. There are worker bees that build homes called hive. They are made from a special wax that comes from the inside of the worker bees bodies. Hives are full of little rooms that are perfect for the baby bees and to store honey.
Bees LOVES to drink nectar from flowers. Then they turn the nectar into honey.

Then we made some adorable bees that we hung on our door with the saying: We Bee-long to God.
